We met The Team of Kapsel Magazine in order to know more about their upcoming Kick Off Night on October 19th, taking over Acud Kunsthaus for a evening dedicated to Chinese Science Fiction Literature. The discussion series has been initiated by Kapsel Magazine, together with the publishing house Frühwerk and Acud Macht Neu with 5 dates throughout 2019-2020.

Hi Kapsel, can you tell us how the project did start out?
Hi! Kapsel took off in 2017 with our translation of the short story „Das Insektennest“ by Chi Hui. Since then we translate and publish Science Fiction stories from China for a German-speaking audience. This year, we are taking things to the next level – and are very excited about that. Thanks to a funding by the city of Berlin and Stiftung Mercator we are now able to invite the authors featured in our magazine to Berlin and give them a stage to talk about their stories and their visions of the future. Most of them will be in Germany for the first time! It means the world to us that Chi Hui will be there for the first event.
Who is behind Kapsel magazine?
The crew of Kapsel currently consists of Frederike Schneider-Vielsäcker, Felix Meyer zu Venne, Marius Wenker, Mengge Chen and Lukas Dubro. But there are also numerous great writers, illustrators, journalists and scientists who contribute to the magazine. For example, Dietmar Dath wrote a story for us; Ruohan Wang, Jule Krusch and Frank Höhne gave life to all the stories in the magazine by illustrating them.
Kapsel’s aims to open-up the Chinese science fiction cosmos to the German public and show the diversity of the genre. You launch next October 19th your five-part series of events, each one based on a Chinese fantastic narrative. Could you present your selection?
Kapsel is all about the stories and their ideas. We ask ourselves: How do Chinese writers portray the future? Regarding the event series, we were looking for stories that address common topics in Chinese science fiction like utopia, AI, society, urbanization, and language. Participating writers are Chi Hui and Xia Jia who we featured in the first editions of Kapsel. On top of that, we are also very happy to welcome Chen Qiufan, Jiang Bo and Regina Kanyu Wang. We are huge fans of their narrations. In March, translator Ken Liu will be joining the conversation of the final evening. He has brought Chinese science fiction to the English-speaking world and has translated Liu Cixin as well as many, many other Chinese science fiction writers. It is amazing to have all of them united at Acud!
The kick-off will take over Acud Kunsthaus. What could people expect from that night?
At the first event, people could expect a discussion revolving around the short story „Der Regenwald“ that was also written by Chi Hui. It is a rather dystopian vision with a very cool setting! Based on Chi Hui’s story we would like to talk about the significant variety of different visions of the future in China. Apart from Chi Hui, we have also invited Song Mingwei, one of the leading researchers of Chinese science fiction, and Liang Shuang, an editor of the biggest science fiction magazine in the world called Kehuan Shijie (300 000 copies per edition). The panel is hosted by scholar and journalist Vera Tollmann.
On the same evening, we celebrate the opening of an exhibition with works from the illustration workshop accompanying the series. Ruohan Wang and Marius Wenker have invited illustrators from Berlin to transform the stories into drawings and comics. And what’s more: A couple of members of the Asian music collective Chinabot will play at the Club. We are happy that they will be in Berlin for this – you should check them out!

Could we already have a hint of the upcoming discussions?
The next discussion will take place on November 29th with author Jiang Bo. Starting from his story „Der Schutzgott“ we would like to talk about the potential of AI to evolve and transform human society. Media producer Diana McCarty and scholar Kai von Carnap will be sharing the stage with Jiang Bo. We have selected the participants of this event together with Alice Cannava, founder of Occulto Magazine, who will guide you through the discussion. On November 30th, Karma Ltd. Extended will be back to Acud with a selection of science fiction movies from China. British filmmaker Lawrence Lek is also invited to the screening event at Acud Kino. He is making stunning animation movies about robots who want to become artists.
In the Chinese Zodiac, 2020 will be the Year of the Metal Rat. How do you see it!? What are you hoping for?
We would love to translate more amazing stories from China! And also hear and discuss your thoughts on the future.

Hi Kapsel, könnt ihr uns erzählen, wie euer Projekt gestartet ist?
Hi! Die erste Ausgabe von Kapsel erschien im Mai 2017 mit unserer Übersetzung der Kurzgeschichte „Das Insektennest“ von Chi Hui. Seitdem erzählen wir Geschichten aus dem zeitgenössischen Science-Fiction-Kosmos Chinas auf Deutsch. Dank der Unterstützung des Berliner Senats und der Stiftung Mercator laden wir die Autor*innen aus unserer Zeitschrift nach Berlin ein, um mit ihnen über ihre Geschichten und Zukunftsvisionen zu sprechen. Viele von ihnen sind zum ersten Mal in Deutschland. Dass Chi Hui beim ersten Abend dabei sein wird, bedeutet uns sehr viel.
Wer ist Kapsel?
Die Kapsel-Crew besteht zum einen aus dem Redaktionsteam: Frederike Schneider-Vielsäcker, Felix Meyer zu Venne, Marius Wenker, Mengge Chen und Lukas Dubro. Und zum anderen aus den vielen tollen Autor*innen, Illustrator*innen, Journalist*innen und Forscher*innen, die zu unserem Gespräch über Zukunft und Literatur beigetragen haben. Ihr möchtet uns die unterschiedlichen Facetten des zeitgenössischen Science-Fiction-Kosmos zeigen. Am 19. Oktober startet eure Diskussionsreihe im Acud. An den fünf Abenden steht immer eine andere Geschichte im Mittelpunkt. Wonach habt ihr sie ausgewählt?
In Kapsel dreht sich alles um die Erzählungen und ihre Ideen. Für die Reihe haben wir Geschichten ausgesucht, in denen es um Themen geht, die typisch für das Genre in China sind, wie Utopie, Künstliche Intelligenz, Gesellschaft, Urbanität und Sprache. Bei der Reihe mit dabei sind Chi Hui und Xia jia, die einige von euch sicherlich schon aus den ersten beiden Ausgaben von Kapsel kennen. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass auch Chen Qiufan, Jiang Bo und Regina Kanyu Wang für die Reihe zugesagt haben. Wir sind große Fans ihrer Geschichten! Am letzten Abend im März schließt sich Ken Liu unserem Gespräch an. Er hat chinesische Science-Fiction in die englischsprachige Welt gebracht und unter anderem „Die drei Sonnen“ von Liu Cixin übersetzt.
Für euren ersten Abend habt ihr einiges vor! Was wird alles am 19. Oktober passieren?
Beim ersten Abend geht es um die Geschichte „Der Regenwald“ von Chi Hui. Eine dystopische Erzählung in einem sehr coolen Setting! Ausgehend von der Geschichte wollen wir im Acud Studio über unterschiedliche Zukunftsvisionen in China diskutieren. Neben Chi Hui haben wir auch Song Mingwei eingeladen, einen der wichtigsten Forscher auf dem Gebiet, und Liang Shuang, Redakteurin des größten Science-Fiction-Magazins der Welt, Kehuan Shijie. Das Panel wird geleitet von der Wissenschaftlerin und Journalistin Vera Tollmann.
An dem Abend feiern wir auch die Eröffnung einer Ausstellung mit Arbeiten aus dem begleitenden Illustrationsworkshop in der Acud Galerie. Ruohan Wang und Marius Wenker haben Illustrator*innen aus Berlin eingeladen, die Bildwelten der Geschichten in Zeichnungen und Comics zu übersetzen. Nach der Diskussion wollen wir feiern: Im Club spielen einige Mitglieder des asiatischen Kollektivs Chinabot.

Die Medienproduzentin Diana McCarty, der Wissenschaftler Kai von Carnap und Jiang Bo sprechen über das Potenzial von Künstlicher Intelligenz, die menschliche Gesellschaft zu verändern und voranzubringen. Wir haben die Teilnehmenden zusammen mit Alice Cannava, der Gründerin des Occulto-Magazins, ausgesucht. Sie wird die Diskussion leiten. Am 30. November ist Karma Ltd. Extended zurück im Acud mit einer Auswahl von Science-Fiction-Filmen aus China. Der britische Filmemacher Lawrence Lek ist ebenfalls zu dem Screening im Acud Kino eingeladen. Er macht tolle Animationsfilme über Roboter, die Künstler sein wollen.
2020 ist das Jahr der Metall-Ratte. Was wünscht ihr euch?
Wir wollen noch mehr fantastische Geschichten aus China erzählen! Und auch eure Ideen für die Zukunft sammeln und diskutieren!
